    ID'd Officer's Certificate Lot - Signed by Lt. Gen. Walter Short (Pearl Harbor)
    The listing is for a small collection of certificates named to Brigadier General George H. "Hoke" Estes Jr..  Estes served during the Spanish American War and saw action in Cuba in 1898 and the Philippine Islands in 1900 and 1901.  He served with the 76th Division during the early days of World War I and then later with the War Department General Staff, where he was a representative of the War Department of Industries Board, Washington, D.C..  In 1918 he was promoted to Brigadier General and organized and trained the 18th Division at Camp Davis, TX.  Service continued after the war and in 1933 he assumed command of the Infantry School at Fort Benning, Georgia.
    Items in the lot consist of:
    Training School for Bakers and Cooks (Mounted Service School) Certificate of Proficiency for Captain George H. Estes, Commissary, U.S. Army.  The certificate is signed by then Captain W.C. Short (Walter Campbell Short), 13th Cavalry, Assistant Commandant.  Short commanded the Hawaiian Department of the United States Army when the Japanese launched their surprise attack at Pearl Harbor.  Short was held responsible and forced to retire from the military after this event.  The certificate has some heavy wear, fading and damage along the right side and left side edges.  There is some creasing, small tears and blemishing to the certificate.  Measures approx. 11" x 8 1/2"
    1918 dated United States War Industries Board certificate for Col. George H. Estes.  The certificate has some wear, fading and blemishing throughout.  The right side has smore blemishing compared to the left.  No tears along the outer edges.  There is some light wear and rubbing to the gilt on the emblem in the center of the certificate.  Measures approx. 17 7/8" x 13 7/8".
    1926 dated certificate (in Spanish) while Colonel Estes was stationed in Puerto Rico.  The certificate has some wear, fading and blemishing throughout.  The seal in the bottom left corner is torn and partially separated from the certificate.  There is some creasing and small tears along all four outer edges.  Measures approx. 22" x 17".
    1928 dated certificate to Colonel George H. Estes, commanding officer of the 65th U.S. Infantry.  The document is signed by several prominent figures in Puerto Rico (Governor, Mayor of San Juan).  The certificate has some wear, fading and blemishing throughout.  It has a natural curl to it as it was stored in the accompanying tube.  Measures approx. 14 1/2" x 18 1/4".
    Tube named to Estes while stationed in San Juan Porto Rico.  Certificates will be re-rolled and kept in the tube.
