AUSTRIAN WAR SHIPS COMMANDEERTHE FALLEN ITALIAN AIRSHIP "CITTA di JESI"
at OCCUPIED POLA in the ADRIATIC
AUGUST 5 1915!!
This is one of the rarest, if not
the
rarest of, military art cards benefitting the Austrian Marine Union, an organization devoted to the welfare of wounded WW1 veterans of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
It portrays one of the most historic events of WW1 and was issued during the war. It was mailed in 1921 using an Imperial 5 Heller Stamp with the portrait of Emperor Franz Joseph, but remains in flawless condition.
The Airship "Citta di Jesi" (City of Jesi) was an Italian War Dirigible under the command of Bruno Brivonesi, one of Italy's most famous admirals in
both
World Wars. On August 5, 1915 it bombed Austrian forces occupying the port of Pola, but was hit by anti-aircraft fire which pierced its shell and caused it to start to deflate and slowly sink into the ocean. Read the full dramatic history here:
wikipedia.org/wiki/CittàdiJesi (Translate to English) and here: wikipedia.org/wiki/BrunoBrivonesi. This mint original card commemorates that very event.
Stunning art card in greys, blues, black, white and red showing Austrian ships circling the downed aircraft whose entire 7-man crew including Brivonesi was captured and sent to the Austrian Prison Camp Mauthausen*
A spectacular original WW1 find!
* We have Austrian currency issued by the town of Mauthausen with real photo images of Allied prisoners int he camp. Please email if interested!
