This is an original press photo. Whether Betsy goes to Smith College at Northhampton, Massachusetts, remains to be seen. There are problems before three Smith students get the surplus hippopotamus from Brooklyn's Prospect Park Zoo on their bid of 0, made "out of pity" for the unwanted animal. Roadblocks include her 4000-pound weight, that she must be taken "as is where is," that she'd "as soon eat you as look at you," and the college stand that it is "not prepared to handle a hippopotamus on campus." Betsy is shown in 1955 with a new offspring. Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches. Photo is dated --1955.
